case law, court may not appoint an attorney and must pay an attorney defendant has existing relationship?

I saw a case somewhere showing that if a defendant has an existing relationship with an attorney and the defendant can not afford to pay any attorney, then the court must pay his attorney and can not appoint a different attorney. Now I cant find the case. Can you?
I’ll take a case in any jurisdiction. The argument is what is important.

Case law is jurisdiction specific. There is no such federal law.
