is it legal to take a picture of the news on tv?

I got an awesome picture (of the tv) of the pope on his recent visit. It was on a live news broadcast. Is it legal or will I get in trouble for posting it on flickr?
haha I meant like will the news channel be mad?

Good question!

I suspect that you will not have a problem: if you were rebroadcasting it might be a different matter, or if you were using the footage itself for a commercial purpose… but you can take photographs of pretty much all things (except certain military buildings) in public places. If you include something else with the image then you have no problem whatsoever as it becomes part of a wider scene.

I suspect this is in a copyright grey area, but I am prepared to be corrected, whatever happens I doubt the broadcaster would consider it worth their while to pursue you and if they did it would probably be simply to ask you to remove it.

    The Pope Police will have you quietly removed to a Convent for a life of being a Nun. You could try and see what happens

    technically, you could get into a lot of trouble… especially if you claimed the photo as yours… if you watch @ the end of news casts, they run theyre © information, stating that no part may be reproduced etc, without the express permission of the station….

    {its the same astaking a picture of the mona lisa… you dont own the rights to the mona lisa… even tho you do own the camera that the replication of the mona lisa was taken on }

    if you really want to post the pic, why dont u send the station a quick email and see what they say??

    I wish I still had my negatives of the TV images I took when the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan!
