Legal transcription

Legal transcription has becoming a popular trend in this speeding market business. It is not only a growing business for larger and smaller service provider but also for home based freelancers as well. Legal transcription is the process of listening to dictation from a professional and then converting that recorded dictation information into the written documentation with good usage of English.

Legal transcription services are used by attorneys, Government agencies, insurance companies, banks and lot of others corporate companies. A legal transcriber is responsible for translating, editing and typing dictations as spoken by lawyers, legal clerk or judges’. A Legal transcriber prepares the document with important information and maintaining relevant clients file like:

  • Legal discussion
  • Hearing summaries
  • Trail proceeding
  • Judgments
  • Interrogatories

Each and every step that takes place in civil and proceeding criminal case needs to be documented Legal transcription is done by first recording the information to a digital voice recorder and then forwarding that file to a selected company which does the coding/indexing. The file can be sent in one to two ways: either by converting the file to MP3 format and sending the data through email or over a secure Internet connection, or by burning the data onto a CD and mailing it in. After receiving the file, transcriptions listens to the tape and transcribes all the information into a written document.

Legal transcription has developed in India and U.S. Although it does not requires much training. Most of the companies are hiring retired lawyers to join their team because they are well qualified in the case of legal lingo and law terms. Though legal transcription has made its way but still it is always underappreciated.

How good are legal or medical digital transcription services?
I work full time as an IT manager whilst my wife has worked as a legal secretary and recently spent 2 years working as a medical secretary. We cannot find her a job that allows her to both drop and pick up our 6y old daughter and heard about digital transcription services. Has anyone had any experience of these and know any good companies to sign up with. Also what are the pitfalls and scams ect.

Not all of them are scams, but she would have to take college classes and work in an office setting for a minimum of 1 year before anyone would hire her.
