How many supreme court justices might have to be replaced in between now and 2016?

and one other question is …..what role does the supreme court’s chief justice play in swaying ideological tilt of the court?…..is he just one vote? or does he control more than that?

this is a difficult question to answer. they are nominated for life so unless they die or retire it’s hard to say. it was thought that obama would have 2 nominees in his first term and that wasn’t counting on souter’s retirement. now you add another 4 yrs. and some of the current justices will be quite old so there’s no telling. the chief justice is one vote and there is lobbying going on all the time to sway other justices.

I don’t know the answer to the first question, who knows what would make someone retire or have some kind of accident or illness that removed them from the court.

On the second question, the chief justice is in charge of assigning who writes the opinions on the cases. He is however, only one vote, and has no more influence than any of the others to try and sway the opinions of the other judges.
